MassKara started in 1980, in the worst year Negros had seen. The sugar market had collapsed and a ferry had gone down with dozens of Negrenses aboard. The city's answer was to make masks that smile and dance through the streets wearing them. Not because nothing was wrong, but because something had to be.

Forty-odd years on the smiles are still there, along with the inasal, the sweetness in the language, and a warmth that visitors always mention and can never quite explain.
