Home of the Bamboo Organ. One thousand and thirty one pipes, and most of them are bamboo.

Father Diego Cera built it in the 1820s out of what was growing nearby, burying the bamboo in sand for months first so it would survive the climate. It is the only instrument of its kind in the world and it still gets played, every February, by organists who fly in to do it.

A church in a coastal town two hundred years ago made something nobody has managed to repeat.
